Turning a Las Vegas Tanning Studio into a Biophilic Destination

How Thoughtful Greenery Transformed a Service Space into a Boutique Experience

In a city defined by bold experiences and high guest expectations, even everyday service environments can — and should — feel elevated. Summer House Tan in Las Vegas recognized an opportunity: instead of operating like a typical tanning studio, the space could become a destination—fresh, sun‑washed, and visually uplifting. UpScapers – Landscape, Elevated partnered with the studio to introduce a biophilic design layer that not only enhanced the brand story, but also created a boutique, resort‑inspired atmosphere that clients feel the moment they walk in.

Why Biophilic Design Works for Health & Beauty Spaces

Greenery has become one of the most powerful tools in modern service‑space design. In tanning studios, salons, and wellness environments, it can:
  • Make the space feel more natural, calming, and boutique
  • Encourage clients to relax and linger
  • Increase brand perception and repeat visits
  • Soften hard surfaces and utilitarian layouts
  • Create photo‑friendly moments for social sharing

But achieving this in a real working studio—with treatment rooms, strict layouts, and high client turnover—requires a strategic, durable, and operationally sound approach.

The Challenge Behind the Beauty

Designing a biophilic moment inside an active Las Vegas tanning studio required solving several design and operational constraints:

1. Purpose-Built, Tight Spaces

Rooms, corridors, and reception zones were shaped around equipment and privacy requirements. The greenery had to work around these limitations while still delivering visual impact.

2. Exposure to Products & Environmental Factors

The space regularly encounters lotions, mists, varying temperatures, and lighting shifts. Materials needed to resist discoloration and wear.

3. Limited Installation Windows

Appointments run continuously throughout the day. The install had to be fast, clean, and minimally disruptive.

4. Brand Clarity

Summer House Tan already had a strong identity: bright, sunny, “endless summer.” Any new greenery needed to enhance—not contradict—that aesthetic.

The Solution: An “Endless Summer” Biophilic Concept

UpScapers created a concept that positioned greenery as an extension of the Summer House Tan ethos: warm, bright, fresh, and coastal.

A Boutique “Arrival Moment” at the Entry & Reception

Soft, thoughtfully placed greenery transforms the front of house into a welcoming vignette. Instead of feeling purely functional, the space now feels like stepping into a boutique resort—photo‑ready and instantly uplifting.

Subtle Transitions Through the Studio

Greenery elements were added along hallways and transition points to maintain continuity, guide the eye, and ensure clients feel immersed from check‑in to treatment rooms.

Organic, Textural Finishes

Plant forms and compositions emphasize natural texture and movement, avoiding harsh lines or overly staged arrangements. The palette aligns with Summer House Tan’s sunny, coastal identity.

A Studio‑Ready Greenery System Designed for Daily Use

To ensure durability, UpScapers selected components specifically engineered for high‑use health and beauty environments:

UV‑Stable, High-Quality Foliage

Designed to maintain color and shape under studio lighting and regular cleaning.

Robust, Intelligent Mounting

Installed to avoid areas where clients or equipment may make contact—protecting both the greenery and the workflow.

Low-Maintenance, High-Impact

Routine upkeep is minimal and fits seamlessly into existing cleaning schedules.

This installation now serves as a scalable reference point for expanding biophilic elements across additional areas or future locations.

Key Takeaways

1. Biophilic Design Can Transform Highly Functional Spaces

Even utility‑driven environments like tanning studios can feel like destinations with the right strategy.

2. Brand + Operations Must Be Designed Together

Beauty alone isn’t enough—every element must support real workflows and client experiences.

3. Collaboration Drives the Best Outcomes

The success of this project came from aligning brand identity, client flow, and durability requirements into one cohesive design.
