Transforming Multifamily Amenity Spaces with a Custom Artificial Living Wall at The Mill at Loggers Creek Apartments
When it comes to elevating multifamily interiors, greenery isn’t just décor—it’s a design strategy. At The Mill at Loggers Creek Apartments, UpScapers partnered with Rutledge Haro Design to deliver a custom artificial greenery installation that enhances the space through balance, contrast, and architectural intention. This project features two integrated elements: a custom Artificial Living Wall and a coordinated planter installation with burgundy and yellow grasses. Together, they create a refined, layered focal point that aligns seamlessly with modern multifamily design trends and biophilic principles. Why Artificial Living Walls Are a Smart Choice for Multifamily Design
Artificial living walls have become one of the fastest‑growing amenities in multifamily and mixed‑use developments. Developers and designers are increasingly specifying faux greenery for one key reason: high visual impact without long‑term maintenance. In amenity spaces, leasing offices, and common areas, artificial living walls provide:- A strong biophilic design presence without irrigation or sunlight requirements
- Consistent year‑round appearance with no seasonal loss
- Durable, fire‑rated materials suitable for high‑traffic environments
- A luxury aesthetic that supports branding and resident experience
For The Mill at Loggers Creek Apartments, the goal wasn’t just greenery—it was a custom feature that felt architectural, intentional, and fully integrated into the interior design concept.
The Design Challenge: Creating Impact Without Overbuilding
Rather than covering the entire surface with dense greenery, UpScapers approached this project with strategic value engineering. The challenge was to create a bold, upscale visual statement while maintaining clean lines, balance, and efficiency. This meant designing an artificial living wall that delivered:- Strong visual depth
- Clear rhythm and movement
- A curated, non‑repetitive composition
- Efficient material use without sacrificing impact
The solution came through intentional composition, not excess.
Using Positive and Negative Space to Elevate the Living Wall
One of the defining features of this installation is the deliberate use of positive and negative space—a technique more commonly seen in architectural and hospitality design than in standard greenery installs.- Positive space consists of denser foliage groupings that create depth, texture, and focal moments.
- Negative space introduces visual pauses, allowing the wall to breathe and preventing it from feeling flat or overwhelming.
This interplay gives the artificial living wall a refined, gallery‑like presence. Instead of reading as a solid green surface, the wall feels layered, sculptural, and intentional—a hallmark of high‑end custom greenery design.
A Custom Planter Design That Complements the Wall
To reinforce the artificial living wall and extend the greenery language into the space, UpScapers designed a custom planter installation using burgundy grasses and yellow grasses. This color pairing was selected to:- Introduce contrast against the green wall
- Add warmth and movement to the space
- Enhance depth without competing for attention
The burgundy grasses ground the design with richness, while the yellow grasses add brightness and visual lift. Together, the planter acts as a supporting element—tying the room together and reinforcing the overall design narrative.
Precision Installation for a Project‑Specific Result
Because this was a fully customized design, installation required meticulous attention to detail. The UpScapers team ensured that:- The artificial living wall maintained its designed balance of positive and negative space
- Foliage density remained consistent with the original design intent
- The planter installation preserved color distribution, scale, and proportion
This precision ensures the finished feature looks exactly as intended—clean, polished, and integrated rather than applied as an afterthought.
