Transforming Trade Show Experiences with a Live Plant Wall at Dreamforce
When it comes to designing unforgettable trade show environments, biophilic elements have become a centerpiece—not just décor. At Dreamforce in San Francisco, UpScapers partnered with DesignShop247 to engineer a dramatic 10' x 8' live plant wall that instantly elevated the booth experience for a major global tech brand. Set inside a compact 8x10 footprint at Moscone Center, this temporary living wall became a lush, high-impact focal point that captured attention, softened the booth environment, and brought nature into one of the world’s busiest convention halls. Why a Living Plant Wall for Trade Show Booth Design?
Biophilic design has become one of the most powerful tools in experiential marketing. Live greenery doesn’t just make a space beautiful—it makes it memorable. For event environments, a living plant wall can:- Increase foot traffic and dwell time
- Create a share-worthy photo moment
- Support brand storytelling with natural texture and depth
- Bring warmth and authenticity to highly technical events like Dreamforce
- Improve attendee mood, comfort, and engagement
But here’s the truth: building a real, live plant wall for a temporary event is not simple. It requires thoughtful engineering, plant expertise, and a seamless logistics plan designed for high-traffic venues.
The Challenge Behind the Beauty
Unlike faux greenery, live walls introduce a new layer of complexity. For this project, the team needed to stay within tight venue rules, weight limits, and installation windows—all while ensuring the plants arrived healthy and camera-ready. This Dreamforce living wall required:- Exact weight calculations for safety approvals from the client’s global operations team
- Structural planning for depth, projection, load, and plant density
- A shipping strategy suitable for live materials traveling from Vancouver to San Francisco
- Seamless coordination across multiple teams, time zones, and approval checkpoints
- A design that matched the client’s creative inspiration while staying feasible for a temporary build
Every detail mattered—from species selection to cassette weight to how foliage would drape once installed.
Design Details That Make This Wall Stand Out
To bring the concept to life, UpScapers developed a living wall system built around:- ~300 live plants (approx. 1 lb each)
- 75 wall cassettes (approx. 1.5 lbs each)
- A total plant + cassette weight near 412.5 lbs
- A finished depth of 5–12 inches, depending on foliage extension
- Devil’s Ivy (Pothos) – cascading softness for visual movement
- Calathea orbifolia – bold, broad tropical leaves
- Pteris cretica ‘Mayii’ – airy ferns for fine texture
- Philodendron ‘Super Atom’ – sculptural anchor plants
- Peperomia polybotrya – glossy, dimensional foliage
To balance density and weight, certain pocket cassettes were intentionally left unplanted and masked with trailing Pothos—an event-friendly strategy that preserved fullness without compromising structural safety. UpScapers also provided a detailed SketchUp model to help the client visualize how the wall would fit within their tight booth footprint.
What to Know Before You Start a Live Plant Wall for an Event
If you’re planning a living wall for a trade show, corporate event, or experiential activation, here’s what matters most:1. Weight calculations are non‑negotiable.
Live plants + cassettes + hardware add up quickly.

2. Live plant shipping must be handled with precision.
Climate, timing, packaging, and routing all impact plant health.

3. Booth size matters.
A 10' x 8' living wall in an 8x10 booth requires millimeter-level planning.

4. Not all species survive transit and event conditions.
Plant selection must balance visual goals with temporary-install practicality.

5. Build a contingency plan.
Live materials have variables—extra plants, redundant shipping plans, and backup strategies keep projects on track.
Why It’s Worth It
Is a live wall more complex than a standard booth backdrop? Yes.Does it deliver unmatched visual and experiential impact? Also yes. The Dreamforce installation achieved:
- A lush, living backdrop that attracted attendees from across the show floor
- A dramatic biophilic element that complemented the brand’s forward-thinking message
- A visually rich environment perfect for photos, conversations, and storytelling
- A successful collaboration between DesignShop247 and UpScapers—thanks to smooth coordination, transparent communication, and meticulous execution
For brands trying to stand out in competitive environments like Dreamforce, biophilic design isn’t just beautiful—it’s strategic.
