Creating Multi‑Dimensional Greenery at Clubhouse Westport with a Three‑Species Artificial Living Wall
When it comes to elevating community‑driven spaces, greenery is no longer an afterthought—it’s a defining feature. At Clubhouse Westport in Westport, Connecticut, our team transformed a clean, modern interior into a layered biophilic experience using a three‑species artificial living wall system built from popular foliage types: Multi‑Tonal Boxwood, Lush Fern, and Jasmine. This curated combination brings richness, texture, and depth to the space, delivering a premium designer finish without any of the maintenance burdens of live plants. Why Multi‑Species Green Walls Matter in Modern Amenity Design
Green walls aren’t just about greenery—they’re about creating an atmosphere. In amenity‑rich environments like Clubhouse Westport, communities expect warmth, character, and a sense of nature woven into their daily experience. A multi‑species installation achieves exactly that:- More texture
- More movement
- More visual depth
- More natural variation
And here’s the truth: sometimes a single‑species wall simply can’t deliver the dimension or realism that today’s residents and designers are looking for. By combining three distinct species—each with their own tone, leaf structure, and density—we can build a wall that feels organic, layered, and intentionally designed.
The Challenge Behind the Beauty
For this project with MZ Interiors (Designer: Megan Zwick), the goal was to create walls that felt elevated yet welcoming—something modern but softened by natural texture. The challenge was balancing:- Contrasting leaf shapes
- Light and dark tones
- Dense and airy foliage
- Rhythm without repetition
- And a “crafted, not manufactured” finish
The space needed statement walls that worked with existing architectural elements and traffic flow while creating a visual moment from every viewing angle.
It brings density, structure, and a rich mix of deep and bright green tones that create an instant backdrop of realism.
Its fine, arching fronds soften the installation and create organic movement that breaks up the uniformity of boxwood.
With delicate leaves and subtle tonal variations, jasmine adds contrast and visual lift, contributing a sense of natural rhythm.
Design Details That Make It Pop
To achieve a truly multi‑dimensional look, we selected three complementary species from the UpScapers collection:1. Multi‑Tonal Boxwood
The foundation species. It brings density, structure, and a rich mix of deep and bright green tones that create an instant backdrop of realism.
2. Lush Fern
The texture maker. Its fine, arching fronds soften the installation and create organic movement that breaks up the uniformity of boxwood.
3. Jasmine
The highlight species. With delicate leaves and subtle tonal variations, jasmine adds contrast and visual lift, contributing a sense of natural rhythm.
What to Know Before You Start
If you’re planning a multi‑species artificial living wall, here are the key elements that matter:1. Plan Your Species Rhythm
Mix foliage types intentionally—avoid “zones” where one species clusters too heavily.2. Use Depth to Your Advantage
Overlap ferns and jasmine over dense species like boxwood to prevent flatness.3. Break Repetition
Rotate panels, stagger species, and adjust individual stems to keep the eye moving.4. Consider Sightlines
A feature wall should look stunning from close up and far away.5. Install at Final Construction Phases
Keeps dust off foliage and ensures an undisturbed installation. Why It’s Worth It
Yes, a multi‑species wall takes more planning, artistry, and precision—but the payoff is undeniable. The completed installation at Clubhouse Westport delivers:- A stunning focal point that anchors the space
- A warm, biophilic atmosphere that enhances the member experience
- Zero maintenance—no irrigation, no plant loss, no lighting upgrades
- A design that stays vibrant year‑round
- A custom look that feels crafted specifically for the space
This project is a clear example of how the right mix of foliage transforms a simple wall into a signature design moment.
